That scream you hear while reading… it’s your own!

Some friendships are best forgotten. Coping with deep financial difficulties and a failing marriage, Niles Goodman is delighted when a figure from his past, Cody Larson, shows with a map and story of buried riches. Embarking on a two thousand mile trip, the journey quickly escalates into horrifying episodes of violence, greed, and terror.

Along their route, road kill are people. After each murder, Cody philosophically justifies the slaughter, nicknaming his chilling acts the Frostproof. Swept into a dark game of life and death, Niles will do anything to protect the innocent who cross their path, even challenging Cody’s unspeakable evil. But can Niles reason with a psychopath who threatens to destroy everyone and everything he cares about?

Review

The Frostproof is chilly indeed! By Todd Russell The blurb for Frostproof sucked me in, promising to tell a story of across country crime spree at the hands of a psychotic named Cody Larson who believes something called Frostproof is making him do it. Cody has escaped the psych ward and convinced a former friend and general good guy, Niles Goodman (against the better wishes of Niles' wife), to accompany Cody on the fateful trip. Niles is promised money that he desperately needs to pay bills.

You know the minute Cody brandishes the severed arm (with map instructions) -- explaining they are taking this to a drug thug in Seattle in order to be shown where a stash of heroin and a bunch of money is -- that no good is going to come of this trip.

And so begins the journey which is filled with murder and mayhem. The book, page-wise clocks in at 195 pages and is told in first person point of view by Niles Goodman. Niles is a good storyteller and the pacing of the tale is good. We never stop too long as readers and get bored and there is pacing toward the satisfactory conclusion.

One gripe: I wish Niles had queried Cody Larson more about the Frostproof. There are more than a few times that Cody talks about what the Frostproof is and why it is causing him to do evil. but I wanted to know even more.

I won a signed copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway and overall enjoyed the read. I'd be interested in reading other books by this author.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story kept me engaged to see just how far the main character would go and could be pushed. For all his wrong doing I couldn't wait to see how much he could take. The characters are well developed and the relationships are frighteningly believable. The ending was not what I expected. We all have people from our past we would rather never see again. Not a long book, but perfect for a plane ride or for someone like me who gets very little time to read. Will continue to follow this author as his career begins to bud. I'm sure there are more great stories lurking in his mind. Enjoy.
