About the Author

Margaret Sidney was the pseudonym of American writer Harriett Mulford Stone Lothrop (1844 - 1924). In addition to writing popular children's stories, she ran her husband Daniel Lothrop's publishing company after his death. The daughter of New Haven architect, Sidney Mason Stone, she was "brought up in an atmosphere of culture and learning enhanced by free access to her father's large library." From early girlhood she "delighted in creating imaginary people". She was educated at seminaries near her home and graduated from Miss Dutton's School at Grove Hall in New Haven in 1862. While a student there "she displayed such mental alertness, combined with retentive memory and a great imaginative and poetic talent that she was marked for future success." She traveled extensively in the United States, and began creating literary compositions early in life.

This book takes place in Europe in the 19th century. Even though the title is the "Five Little Peppers Abroad" don't let that fool you. Only two of the five little Peppers go abroad, the two girls (Polly and Phronise). They, along with Jasper, Mamsie, Dr. Fisher, Mr. King, and Parson and Mrs. Henderson have many interesting adventures and meet many interesting people along the way. I liked this book even though I still wish that Ben, Joel, and Davie (the other three Peppers) would have gone. But oh well. I still enjoyed it and I'm sure you will too.

I read The FIve Little Peppers and How They Grew as a child and, as a much older person I still enjoy stores about "the little brown house". I don't think I was aware that many other books were written and I thoroughly enjoyed this trip back to my childhood.

A fun read for all ages. Who doesn't love stories of children growing up and the many adventures they have. I thoroughly enjoyed traveling with Polly and Phronsie. And getting a birds eye view on what Joel, David, and Ben where doing. I would recommend this book for family reading at it's best. All the Pepper books are a treasure to be enjoyed.

It's so refreshing to see moral character valued. I so enjoy a book that centers on the moral of the story. Of course I loved Paul Harvey too, lol. Every child should read, or be read, books from this time period. The world would be a better place.

Really Horrible Format and supper ugly cover

My Mom purchased these for my daughter. The formatting inside was atrocious. They do not indent for paragraphs and the font is so close to the edge of the page it is hard to read. I couldn't for the life of me read it because I was so caught up with the lack of properly, indenting the paragraphs, that it was driving me nuts. Nor do I want my daughter to read a book with the wrong grammar formatting. I do not want her getting use to seeing things wrong and duplicating it. I could see that they were cutting corners so that they could print them as cheaply as possible. For me as soon as we can afford another copy I am ditching this one into the trash. The cover was so hideous on it that my 6 year old looked very disappointed and uninterested in reading it.

Please read all the Pepper books and share them with your children. Some of the character names are silly, but overall it is a lovely series, not unlike the Boxcar Children, Little Women, or The Little Princess. Wholesome, but rather over the top with all the adventures that go on. The series is an interesting snapshot of the times, including the author's impressions of education, housing, charititable works for the different classes of people involved.

A Disappointment - Five Little Peppers

Five Little Peppers was a disappointment in that the print was small and crowded on the page, making the prospect of reading them daunting. The books were brand new which was nice, and I wondered why they were so inexpensive until I received them. The last pages showed they had been printed approximately only a month before. I'm guessing the pages were so crowded because the publisher must have been trying to save money on paper. The books were a gift for my granddaughter, a voracious 11 year old reader. My personal copy of the first book was delightful with easy-to-read pages, but the print of these books does not encourage reading I do not recommend these books due to the print format.
