4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 224 ratings

From the Author of 'War Paint' & 'Nate Grisham'
Ex-Confederate Colonel Jake Masters became a bounty hunter following four years of bloody conflict, because all he knew was how to kill. After an Arizona bank robbery turns bad and people die, the robbers turn south into Mexico, thinking they've made a clean getaway. Little do they know, Jake Masters, a bounty hunter who never fails to get a man he's after, is on their trail and he's determined to bring them in...dead or alive. In the Sonoran Desert, hot on the path of the outlaws, Jake meets a beautiful but injured woman, the lone survivor of a vicious Apache massacre. She must come with him or risk crossing the scorching desert alone.

The outlaws, reduced in numbers by Jake to only two men, pull off a successful gold heist in Mexico, and then run with their newly gained riches to Saint Louis. The action never slows down in this western tale of the hunter and the hunted, because Jake Masters doesn't know the meaning of the word quit.

I do not believe that W.R. Benton, could write a poor novel if he tried. I am a great fan of Benton's works and have read a gob of them. The only problem I have is putting the book down and do my manly chores, which the wife expects me to do I fear that my Kindle may succumb to some "unfortunate" and violent destruction or otherwise be rendered inoperable. Benton's writings are so engrossing, interesting and believable it boggles the imagination. Once you read one of Benton's novels, you will be hooked.

I enjoyed this adventure story - lots of action, good descriptions and even a little romance. The only part that threw me is where Martha suddenly turned into Sara halfway through the book, but since Jake and Tin Cup never noticed, I ignored it too

Lately, it seems my favorite westerns are about bounty hunters.
Jake Masters is one of the best. Hard on the outside, tough to survive, but good enough to be respectable. This first adventure covers a lot of country, has a lot of action, and has some memorable characters, like Tin Cup as well as two ladies who make the goodness come out in our heroes.
Well written and with a satisfactory conclusion.

It was easy read. I was disappointed in some of the mistakes. What happened to the house they rented in San Antonio? Some sentences didn't make sense. You need to work on your proofing.

An enjoyable read of the post civil war times and the settling of the west. Jake Masters has become a bounty hunter who experiences a series of excitement and thrills as he pursues four thieves and murders through Texas and Mexico. He is joined by his old friend Tin Cup and his travels lead him to tragedy and romance, so saddle up and enjoy your read.

I've read 7 or 8 of W.R. Benton's shining, warpath, and bounty hunter, soldier, reads the last couple of weeks and if you have a few free minutes W.R. Benton can at least return our minds to the 1800 where a man can act like a man and law, justice and stomping you're own snakes is the right thing to do, so back to the 2000where a man has to be bitten 5 or 6 times before he can even complain oh for simpler times, thanks W.R.

This is the first book that I have read by W.R. Benton, but I will be looking for more. Jake Masters turned bounty hunter after the war, because that was what he was good at. He has a hard side and a soft side. I wondered all the way through how it would end. It was very well written, I had a hard time putting it down. A little blood here and there, but I guess that is what happens when your a bounty hunter.

Good to read in spite of its sloppy quality. There are plenty of spelling mistakes and inconsistencies, e.g. the robbers make 200'000 $, split it into two parts should be 100'000 $ each but by a miracle in mathematics each turn up with 200'000 $, a bodyguard Will is killed but miracle again he is resurrected to be killed again a few pages later. Also the eating events are quite repetitive, plentiful and opulent. No wonder the US have a weight problem when even in Westerns with supposedly frugal meals they eat so much. The story is too romantic to boot and moral discussions abound as well as killingd by shooting into the belly of the miscreant. Even though the book is good to read in my opinion it is a typical product of a prolific author turning out too many books without the premium of quality
