4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 249 ratings

Egypt, 1939

When John Warrey agrees to act as navigator for a trans-Saharan expedition led by the famous photographer Margo Cartwright, he has no idea what he is getting himself into.

What begins an exotic adventure quickly turns into a grim battle for survival.

The Italian Colonel Umberto comes to the rescue just in time, but their safety is jeopardised once more by the discovery that Margo is in fact a British secret agent.

Back in England, John’s courage and ability attract the attention of the intelligence service alongside Margo’s recommendation.

After some gruelling training he returns to Cairo to spy on Il Duce’s men and make contact with Senussi tribesmen – potential British allies – under the guise of a typewriter salesman.

When war breaks out, John and Margo are caught up in a web of intrigue and action as the Desert Rats storm towards Tripoli, only to be halted and thrown back by Rommel’s Afrika Korps.

Many prisoners are left behind - John and Margo among them - facing betrayal and death on every side…

Will they evade death once more or is this finally the end?

4.0 out of 5 stars More spying
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 24, 2020
Enjoyed this book, though at times more socialising than was necessary. Historical data good. Some gratuitous violence, which seemed unnecessarily lurid.

A readable yarn but I feel it was aimed more at adolescent boys with vivid imaginations. Suspension of disbelief is required.

Stop Rommel (Sword Series Book 4) by Christopher Nicole
What begins as an exotic adventure turned into a battle for survival. Discovering that your trusted companion is a spy for British Intelligence and then becoming recruited yourself leads John Warrey and Margo into a web of intrigue against the German Afrika Korps. Fortunately their Italian friend comes to their rescue.
A lot of action and suspense with a few lighter moments. I enjoyed the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A difficult book to put down.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 23, 2020
Having read other books by this author, I picked the book up with confidence. The trouble was, I couldn't put it down again and found myself reading long into the night.

Well worth it for anyone who likes an intelligent adventure story set against a strong historical backdrop.
