Editorial Reviews

Review

I had just finished reading Ready Player One, and was looking for another book like it. Rune Universe sorth of fits that description. Sort of, because in my opinion, I enjoyed Rune Universe significantly more than Ready Player One. Both were great books, but Rune Universe just feels more immediate. Maybe less cerebral, too. More accessible. It was a very fun story, deftly blending Cole's bleak real life, with his adventures in "Deep Dive Immersion". A fun, frantic read, and one in which I found myself deeply invested in the characters.-Crewman6---I'm not into science fiction much, and video games have never been my strongest hobby, nevertheless, I enjoyed every single line. Sometimes I had to stop reading because I was laughing so much, others, the excitement kept me from paying attention to my surroundings (almost as if I were in full immersion).
I've seen some people complain about the MC; well, of course some of his actions are frustrating, but they only make the story more entertaining.
I loved the writing style. I can perfectly picture the characters feeling what they are saying, and reacting the way they do.
Hugo Huesca surely has a lot to offer and I'll be waiting eagerly for his next book!
-Paulina--- I finished it in a day. The story incorporates fragments from other pieces of scifi and anime in a very smart manner. The way the story develops and how it jumps from VR to reality is very smart. Can't wait to read the second part.-Imanol

This is an excellent read, with a great interweaving of the mundane and the fantasy, the world as we know it and the game that is more than a game, with great plot and character interactions. The book is good at hinting several possible ‘big reveal’ scenarios throughout – even up to the final chapters I wasn’t certain if they were going for an AI or Aliens scenario – keeping me hooked all the way through the end. However it steers clear of that fatal flaw of so many books, the cliffhanger ending, wrapping up the plots of this book while still keeping enough tantalizing material for future installments. The ONLY problem I had with the book was the sudden cut between chapters 24 and 25 – it seems like there is a transition page or paragraph or chapter missing that completely threw me out of the story for a short bit. However overall this is an extremely well written book, and I hope to read more from this world!

This book has an underlying premise that is wonderful and very novel. (Can't tell you what it is because, spoilers.) I find the characters likeable and the story has a fresh, inventive feel. There are many engaging details, and the mechanics seem to really make sense. I really couldn't put it down. Also, in answer to the protagonist's question: No, things can't rust in space, because rusting requires oxygen. They can, however, corrode, because molecules are broken up by solar radiation. Overall, quite a worthwhile book. Looking forward to part two.

I had a tough time getting into the book but when it got to the part where our hero gets into the game I couldn’t stop reading. The reasons I am giving this only a four star rating is because of the time it took me to get into the story and because there are so many grammatical errors. It needs a good editor to get a five star rating from me. The best part of the b

Fantastic arc, Cole leads well and they (Cole's group) had to struggle for what they needed. Then in the end it was totally worth that struggle, I hope we see more of Van his sister.

It was very hard to stay in the moment when reading this book because the weird grammar on almost every page just made it impossible to read without going over sentences twice at times to try to parse them and work out what they meant. I didn't know who the author was while I was reading it but it was clear it was written by a non-native speaker of English, or written in another language and translated badly. Having finished the book I looked up the author who I see is Mexican, and my guess is he is writing in English rather than hiring a professional translator or a native speaker as a proof-reader. Which is a pity because the story is OK as sci fi for teens, a lightweight Enders Game or Armada or Ready Player One style novel. Nothing deep but an enjoyable read, apart from the incessant breaking of the suspension of disbelief caused by the jarring use of inappropriate prepositions and pronouns. I'd suggest to him, if he reads this, to run every page of his next novel through ChatGPT or similar to fix the solecisms if he can't find a competent proof reader to do the job. (And judging by some of the appalling English I've read in recent Star Trek novels published by Simon & Schuster who presumably *can* afford competent proof-readers, I'm beginning to suspect that there just aren't enough to go round nowadays, which is a sad reflection on the state of education in the USA).

Even though it may feel bumpy at times and seems to need some editing, this was a great read. I finished it in a day. Can't wait to read the second part.

An interesting story to read about a young man, trying to support his family through petty crime, and how life was changed through a gift, (a VR Headset with a permanent subscription to the Rune).
An interesting take on RPG and how you learn skills, with no grinding. Overall - a good book to read, a tad slower in the middle, but the pace picked up towards the end with a great finish.

I really want a game like the rune universe. Even if aliens have to supply it. I lost half a nights sleep to this book, and enjoyed every minute.

La trama se mueve rápido y es envolvente, apta para todas las edades. Los personajes se sienten reales y no son ni perfectos ni hechos de cartón. El final es muy bueno, espero que las secuelas también lo estén

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow start but strong ending.

Like the prequel, editing is a mess, but I certainly enjoyed the story overall

The story focuses on an alternate MC to the prequel, though he does make a cameo of sorts. We also hear from other characters throughout the book. I hope to see some of these characters react to each other later in the series.

At first the MC is fairly annoying and unlikable. With the supporting characters being more interesting. But his development throughout the book certainly improves this.

I look forward to reading more
