Former neuroscience researcher, born again novelist. During my studies, it struck me as odd that I could learn so much about behavior without understanding the intricacies of human nature. I realized that I learned more about what it means to be human from reading stories than I ever had from my text books, and I was inspired to write.

I spent several years selling scripts in Los Angeles, but was ultimately frustrated with my lack of control over my projects. A general stubbornness and unwillingness to compromise my creative pursuits led me to starting my own publishing house to do things my own way.

I now work full time as a novelist and publisher, putting out a new book every month with Haunted House Publishing.

Some reviews compare this book with the Harry Potter series. I’ll admit that there are similarities but nothing that really bothered me. The writing is exceptional and I really did highlight various quotes that I’d like to remember. I had fun reading this although it does get creepy. I’ll look for the next book in the series.

I first discovered Tobias Wade via his Sleepless Nights collection, they’re amazing, so I was looking forward to reading full stories from him. I love the perspectives he has and how he can twist plots so you don’t predict the endings, or put things together too easily. I didn’t feel bored, just really curious to watch the explanations unfold. I really like the take on rebirth/reincarnation, and I’m excited to read the next installment. Honestly, this book would be hella cool as a movie, too. I would recommend this to young adults on up.

I usually avoid series books like the plague and, honestly, didn’t know this was going to be one of them. BUT. I read this part of the story and (just finished it) immediately bought the next one. Me laying out $2.99 for a book is almost unheard of, but I felt like I was vested in finding out what more there was to come. The characters are often not what they seem, but the reveal was worth the wait. I’m anxious to see what other reviewers think.

What starts off as a compelling horror story in its own right takes an abrupt twist, becoming something that can't seem to help courting Harry Potter comparisons, albeit never quite favorable ones. Though the tropes become more cartoonish, the macabre ones don't fully disappear, leaving me very confused on the intended audience or even genre. Also confusing is a relentless wave of exposition dominating nearly the first half of the book. It's unclear how much it, as well as the A-turned-B plot from the first few horror-centric chapters, will come back into play.

Fortunately for readers who stick it out, an intriguing and ominous plot does develop, suggesting the original premise was more than just a throwaway to give the audience whiplash. Thematically, there's some potentially interesting elements about political abuse of power and the loss of ignorant innocence as loss of life itself, but oddly doesn't seem to delve that much into the titular theme of death other than as an aesthetic.

The only criticism I could make is that it's a wee bit Harry Potterish, with demons instead of goblins. Then again demons and goblins are pretty similar so who knows? I'm very fond of the cat Mrs Robinson and really she somehow, but becomes real enough for Claire to cuddle.
