Chandra Ghosh Ippen is a child psychologist and award-winning children’s book author. She is Associate Director of the Child Trauma Research Program at the University of California, San Francisco, Director of Dissemination and Implementation for Child-Parent Psychotherapy, and a member of the board of directors of Zero to Three. She has spent the last 28 years conducting research, clinical work, and training in the area of childhood trauma and has co-authored over 20 publications on trauma and diversity-informed practice. Her children’s books include Once I Was Very Very Scared, Holdin Pott, You Weren’t With Me, Mama’s Waves, and the Trinka and Sam disaster series, which has reached over 300,000 families across the world.

This book offers such a relatable way to talk to children about how we can all “blow up” if we keep putting a lid on our feelings without ways to release them. As a parent, I appreciate how the author compassionately acknowledges that big pots (= grownups) can also blow up if we don’t have ways to release pressure. This is definitely one of our favorite books; even as my kids have grown, this story has given our family an important metaphor about ways to turn to each other to seek connection when needing to process something that’s bothering my kids.

The story of Holden Pott has a special place in my heart. This story captures the many emotions children experience and illustrates beautifully how important it is to be seen, heard, and understood. To have someone there for you to be your big hands, validate your feelings, and help create meaning of your experiences through illustrations and stories little ones and their grownups can relate too is priceless. After many years working with young children and supervising staff, Holdin Pott made its way to my own family. My son came home from school one day and saw Holdin Pott on my desk and said “Mama you know Holdin too?” Mrs. T read it to us in class.

This is a review of Holden Pott from my 9yo son C. This is a book about holding in your feelings. Parts of the story made me sad when Little Pott was being bullied by other pots. But I really loved the part when the Dad Pott talked with Little Pott and helped him feel better. He talked to Little Pott about getting over his fears and helped him learn different ways to handle all his big feelings.

It's relatable as children (and adults) will explode at times when their feelings get so big. We talk about not holding feelings in so we don't explode and instead sharing them with a loving and safe person. Highly recommend!
