Die Buying (Mall Cop Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,071 ratings

Emma-Joy Ferris likes mall cop work, even though it's a bit more humdrum than the military policing she did in the army. But there's no time to be bored when someone 'liberates' a 15-foot python from the Herpetology Hut, and a mannequin turns out to be a very real corpse.

Just great fun! Loved the location, the characters well written and interesting, the plots are all calculated to fit into the puzzle! Super book! High five to the author!

This is a fantastic start to what could be a wonderful series.

In this book, EJ is a mall cop. She has dreams and hopes to being a real cop, but she has an injury that could stop her from being a cop. She's a mall cop, and figures that's as close as she'll get. However, when a dead body turns up at her mall, she's found and determined to solve the case and to prove she has the abilities to be a cop. With all of this going on, she has to deal with people spraying painting cars, and it seems there was a mass breakout at the mall, and reptiles are on the loose, and EJ also wants to get them back to their home. That's all I really want to say about the plot, I don't want to give anything away.

The cast of characters are wonderful. We have people we love, and people we love to hate. I loved EJ's grandpa, he adds so much to this. We have a detective who thinks EJ is kind of a joke, EJ's boss who agrees with the detective, EJ's parents and co-workers, and someone who is more than they claim to be.

The writing style is a nice one. The story flows at a nice pace, and isn't bogged down with a lot of useless information. The characters seem real and life-like, you can't help but to want to get to know.

If I had one issues, and I do, it's this: There are some odd word spaces. Sometimes a single word is broken up like "n ot" and sometimes words are mashed together, like "don'tdothat." Granted, it may not be the fault of the author, and could be an issue with the kindle publication.

This is a nice start to a series I look forward to reading more installments to it. If you start Die Buying, you won't be sorry. I know I wasn't.

I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was a freebie and I expected it to be a quick fluff read, however, it was good. I see lots of potential for future books in this series. EJ is smart and a lot more than a mall cop. One of my favorite parts of the book is her grandpa. EJ not only is a veteran, her dad is a famous actor, and she is quick on her feet while taking in all the details, this book was good. I also like the writer's style. The dialog between characters was done extremely well. Plus, who doesn't like a bunch of reptiles and a huge python named Agatha on the loose in a mall? This book has a lot to like.

I am just not a cozy mystery person. I have decided! It had some really good moments and Grandpa was a real entertaining character, but I felt no real interest in what was happening.

If you're like me, you may have wondered just how entertaining a mystery set in a mall could be. I'm happy to say for me that it can be and was very entertaining.

Die Buying is set in the Fernglen Galleria in Vernonville, Virginia. Emma-Joy Ferris, EJ to her co-workers and friends, is a former Air Force security guard who was wounded in Iraq and forced to take a job as mall cop because police departments wouldn't hire her due to her remaining disability. The action she sees at the mall isn't like what she saw in Iraq by any means, but it is anything but boring.

The book is well written and flows very well. The action keeps the story moving along a great, quick clip. The characters are well drawn and likable--except when they're not supposed to be. There's humor in the book, too, though it isn't over the top and feels very natural. I also liked the way the author drops information about Iraq and the war into the book in a light, informing way. Who knew that camel spiders in Iraq are dinner-plate sized!

Whenever I buy a debut to a mystery series, I'm always a little uncertain how much I'll really like it. I was very pleased to find I loved this book and found it to be a good cozy mystery. Overall, entertaining and good cozy with a brisk pace. I highly recommend it!

I enjoyed the character in this story, her way of thinking, her insecurities of her knee, and trying to get on a police department. The book was 😊 good! You wouldn't think a Mall would be so exciting and dangerous at the same time! The description was really good of the location where the story took place, very detailed. I recommend this book!

This is a great start in a detective series. The main character is a war veteran that works as a mall cop at a large shopping mall in Virginia. A leg injury suffered on the battlefield has perverted EJ 'Emma Joy' Ferris for doing what she wanted more then ever to become a police officer, the only carreer she can muster is as a mall security guard, where her days include pursuing shoplifters, rounding up reptiles, and looking for vandals, that is until one day she spots the body of a big shot mall developer propped up in one of the store displays. She decides to "play" detective and show the real cops that she's one of them. The rest of the story is very entertaining and interesting. The mystery is great to figure out. I definitely like the idea of a mall cop with PTSD in other then in an action hero movie, it's toned down for that semi cozy mystery fell, but feels more like crime fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit long
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 3, 2021
Although this is pretty free from typos and editing issues I could not really get into this after the first few chapters. I found it a bit repetitive and slow; not much action is happening with EJ. other than patrolling the mall. More could have been made of the escaped reptiles to add some humour. I did not find this a fun read as the dialogue was not particularly funny or entertaining. EJ's immediate boss is a douche and she does well not to lose her temper with him.

This started out well and was quite a bit different to the usual cozy mystery but the momentum got somewhat last at times and it did not keep me enthralled.

Diese Mordgeschichte hat mal einen anderen, originellen Ansatz, hat ein schnelles Erzähltempo und hält einen gefesselt. Den Rest der Serie habe ich mir schon zum Lesen vorgemerkt.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last...a really intelligent cozy
Reviewed in France on June 12, 2015
Don't get me wrong. I love the cozy genre, but....I sometimes get tired of the totally formatted approach. There's nothing formatted about Laura DiSilverios first book in the Mall Cop series. Her heroine, E J Ferris is a Mall cop. She spends her days trying to apprehend shoplifters, dealing with dissatisfied customers; making sure the maintenance crew do the necessary upkeep to the mall, while all the time hoping to land a job in a police force. This seems to be more and more a hopeless endeavour as she is an Afghanistan veteran discharged from the army due to a wound that has very badly damaged her leg. So she's not the typical breathlessly attractive amateur sleuth, all wavy auburn hair and baby blue eyes. We do get a hint that she is attractive, but she's very human in that her gammy leg ruins any self- esteem she might have to the point of going to the swimming pool when she knows that very few other people will be there to see her leg. this may sound depressing. It's just the contrary. I hesitated before buying the book, afraid that I was going to find a litany of woes and self pity. However, i found a very well written book full of humour (as seen in the description of the hunt for all the reptiles that had been let loose into the mall by animal rights activists, or of the naked corpse found in one of the mall shop windows) and a thoroughly likeable character in EJ. I laughed a lot and couldn't put the book down until I'd finished it. Then I went and bought the next 2 books in the series which are equally as good and have been read with as much pleasure.
