Growing up, all she knew was writing. Shamika has often said that writing gave her voice when she was mute. That was true, to some extent. In the written word, Shamika could transport herself to a place where her thoughts created trees and beautiful streams that birthed a number of living creatures. Before the publication of her first novel, Popularity Rules, she had already written (in actual notebooks) a number of books and was thrilled to share them with the persons around her.

If you love YA mixed with romance, suspense and action, this novel should definitely be right up your alley! Despite being nearly 400 pages, I finished the book in two days. It was a relatively easy read, and the characters are each unique and memorable, and "fictional friends" you'll want to revisit. I especially loved the female characters (Avery, in particular). She was fun and snarky, and truly difficult to predict (which I love in a character, and it coincided nicely with Jason's own perception problems). From start to finish, I couldn't predict what was coming next, and the ending was bittersweet. However, it left the potential for a sequel (which I would definitely read!), so there might be more on the horizon for these characters.

I haven't really picked up a teen novel since I was about sixteen myself, which is why I wondered how well this one would play out. However, this is no ordinary teen fiction novel. This one has a twist I didn't expect because to me, it started out as any other teen fiction. The twist gets better and more mysterious as the book goes on. Shamika Lindsay does quite well at keeping you guessing and your attention. All teens and some young adults should buy this book!

If you read alot books after awhile you can even predict the outcome of some. This is not that book! I really love the two main characters. What draw them to each other's? What Avery story? What will happen in the end? I kept asking myself these questions and is only close to the end you will get those answers 😂. Don't get me wrong that a plus in my book. Let just say you will not be disappointed. Plus I see part 2 in the making

This book is the definition of UNPREDICTABLE. Usually it’s so easy to guess what will happen next but not in Popularity Rules.

Also, Avery was my favorite character! I know I am not the only one that imagined her face and voice 😂 😂😂😂

It took me one week to finish reading because I didn’t want it to end!!

I am hoping the author has more stories in the making!!!

Here's why I gave this book a charitable, yet deserving FIVE stars!!!

1. *Moralistic Value* - The series of acutely selfish, naïve, id-driven decisions made by the protagonist Jason Forbes apppealed to my sense of morality and conscience. It left me musing on what I would have or should have done if I were in his position. Additionally, the author subtlely championed the value of modest dressing in females and merited a woman's intelligence and uncompromising self worth - could these attributes possibly form the path to earning a man's affection and sustained attention?

2. *Character Development* - I am amazed at how skillfully the author was able to capture layers of enigma, charm and ambivalence in Avery Sanchez. I appreciated certain minute details about her occasional glares, blank unreadable expressions and occasional displays of vulnerability. This is not to say that others in the rich plot weren't noteworthy. Each character was amply deserving of their fair share of marvel such as Jason and his parents, Mark, Jade, Breanna, Chantal, Gina and Elijah (If I don't stop soon this is gonna sound like Cliff notes). I usually don't care much about side characters in novels but somehow this darn book had me dicing away the characters, layer by layer. I must concede that Avery's sister was underwhelming for me. Somehow, I wanted more from her role esp toward the end. This wasn't enough for me to remove a star though.

3. *Suspension of Disbelief* - (SPOILER ALERT) So even with the HSM "All in this together" reference at the swim meet and the highly improbable rat in the classroom scene that saved A and J from being discovered behind the curtains or the showdown at the end.... Even with these unattainably improbable epic life moments, the author still managed to pull off an arresting tale and made you believe the story was real in chunks.. The suspense was gobbled with gratitude.

5. Here's my real reason for the 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟*I CARED*. That's right, I gave a damn.

IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO THIS...
So many novels out there contain the sophisticated mastery of words and literary quips without capturing the minds and hearts of readers. Few novelists can produce cathartic work that can melt away my laziness to invest emotional appeal (di mount a time mi wah boof Jason wid a greasy frying pan). Shams cracked the code and took me on a journey mentally.

Popularity Rules, reigned! I'm grateful and proud!
