The Coral Island & The Gorilla Hunters: Adventure Classics: A Tale of the Pacific Ocean & A Tale of the Wilds of Africa Kindle Edition
"The Coral Island: A Tale of the Pacific Ocean" relates the adventures of three boys marooned on a South Pacific island. The story is told from the perspective of 15-year-old Ralph Rover, one of three boys shipwrecked on the coral reef of a large but uninhabited Polynesian island. Ralph and his two companions – 18-year-old Jack Martin and 13-year-old Peterkin Gay – are the sole survivors of the shipwreck. At first, boys have to manage how to feed themselves, what to drink, and how the resolve clothing and shelter, coping with having to rely on their own resources. As the boys adopt to the situation, they start dealing with new difficulties, such as conflicting with pirates, fighting with native Polynesians, and dealing with Christian missionaries and their conversion efforts.
"The Gorilla Hunters: A Tale of the Wilds of Africa" is a sequel to The Coral Island set in "darkest Africa", and it follows the further adventures of Ralph Rover, Peterkin Gay and Jack Martin. After their adventures in the South Sea Islands, Jack, Ralph, and Peterkin go their separate ways. Six years later, Ralph, living on his father's inheritance on England's west coast and occupying himself as a naturalist, is visited by Peterkin, whose "weather-beaten though ruddy countenance" he does not recognise. Peterkin, who has stayed in touch with Jack, has hunted and killed every animal on Earth except for the gorilla and now comes to Ralph to entice him on a new adventure. After Peterkin writes him a letter, Jack joins the two, and they leave for Africa.

What I liked of this book is not afraid to put as Christian perspective. All of it was viewed from Ralph. It was amazing how God changed the natives to become believers. It’s shows like us we were lost in our sin where Jesus came and rescuers us from death.

I first read this as a very young boy, when kids were always encouraged to read the 'Classics'. In recent years (now over 60 years old) it was remembered with fondness, although I couldn't remember much of it. The only part that I could remember, in any detail, was the section where the boys discovered the section of the coast where the waves entering a cave were forced up through the rock beneath their feet. It was fascinating to find this section was remembered so accurately, yet the rest of the story had almost totally faded from my memory.
Having read it again, I was surprised to find how some passages were so gory and blood thirsty and find it hard to believe that an unedited version was recommended reading for 'boys'.
If, like me,you have happy memories of the stories that were popular so many years ago e.g. "Treasure Island"; "Kidnapped" etc, then revert to your childhood and give them a try. If you are a parent, who would like your kids to read this particular piece of your past, look through at least the second half to find if you think it's suitable for very young kids.

Horrible small print with almost a 2 inch margin on all sides. The print, even for someone with no issues reading, would complain. Worse printed book I have ever received!

As a long time student of things related to primitive mankind, I found this book compelling, both in the manner displayed by civilized young boys marooned on a deserted island and those characteristics on horrific display by native islanders of the most primitive inclinations.

It's a classic that is worth reading. I bought it, only to my disappointment to see that the font can't even be described as small, it's so tiny, one needs magnifying glass to read it.

Who wouldn't be delighted to find the public domain list of FREE classic literature. This is fantastic. All the titles I've always wanted to read and for free - this is my kind of kindle heaven. I love the way they arrive on your kindle, they're so quick, it's like magic. Thank you public domain!

Following alongside the tale of Crusoe , these adventures of three young boys shipwrecked and fallen among savages is an easy read .the discoveries of edible plant, fruit and animal in order to survive is knowledge that can , nowadays only be found on your computer .how to make fire ,definitely a good schoolboy read and well worth joining the adventure if only in your head , not considered PC ,
