A captivating ghost story that leaves you wanting more. I would love to read of “Miss Cire” time before leaving the #9 if EM Markoff chose to write about her! I love the cultural touchstones and the sense of place evoked in piece and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an atmospheric short read!

E.M. Markoff has written a spellbinding short story. I was so enthralled with the rich details and character development that the unexpected plot twist floored me and I immediately read the story again! An excellent read and I highly recommend it and Markoff’s other works.

E.M. Markoff's writing drew me in right away, and I quickly devoured this story. Despite the short length, it's everything I look for in a ghost story. I will definitely be reading more from Markoff in the future!

Excellent writing, captivating plot, and unforgettable characters.

The protagonist is a young woman on the brink of opening a restaurant in conjunction with her brother's butcher shop, somewhere in the American Southwest or northern/northwestern Mexico, when things go bad. And worse. It gripped me very strongly and impressed me with the richness of detail and elegant smoothness of the prose, and the dark satisfactions of the resolution.

Very highly recommended.

Nice little ghost story here. Gamely balanced between delivering the scares without getting trite and repetitive. The surreal aspects add something as well, keeps you unbalanced, which at least imo, raises the tension and the narrative stakes. Ends at the right moment, with a full horrendous punch. Great stuff!

A great story that you can finish over a cup of coffee. The twists and turns leave the reader very satisfied.
