The Story of the Lost Bear, Two Suns: The Way to Equality is Through the Heart Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

♥ WE ARE ALL ONE BUT DIFFERENT, DIFFERENT BUT THE SAME!

Two Suns is a young Brown Bear from Alaska. One morning, after losing his way and his family, he finds himself in the North Pole surrounded by other animals who have never seen a Brown Bear before. Of course, Bears from the North are all supposed to be white.

The story serves as a metaphor for kids, demonstrating how a simple difference in appearance can cause misunderstanding, confusion, and even sadness. It aims to show children, in a light-hearted way, that no one should be treated with less care or respect simply because their appearance is not the same. A beautiful tale with a happy ending, this story hopes to bring a standstill to adverse racial, cultural, and social discrimination in a way that is easy for children to understand.

Unfortunately this is a story that needs to be told again and again and again. We just cannot seem to take the message to heart so that it becomes ingrained in our very nature. What is on the outside isn't what's important. What matters - at least what NEEDS to matter - is what is in the heart. The most beautiful person could have an evil heart. Someone severely burned or disfigured may very well be the best person you will ever meet. If we are only seeing someone on a surface level, we are not being OUR best selves.

Thankfully the polar bear in this story was willing to help the poor brown cub. Not only that, she gave all those judgmental animals a good dose of the "knock it off now" message. She wasn't afraid to stand up for what was right even if the face of opposition. OK, I realize that she was much bigger and more ferocious than everyone else, but if that is where you are heading, you are missing the entire point of the story. Accepting people without regard to how they look should be habitual even when we feel like David against Goliath. If we don't see the good in people no matter their color, shape, or size, then we need to keep trying to do better until we finally get it!

Sure, give this book to the children in your life, but don't stop there. Give it to parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors.... We ALL need to hear this message, and this book is a gentle way to get it. There is no preaching or belittling or yelling or talking down to anyone. Yes, there is repetition, but it is not ad nauseam. People learn through repetition. Yes, we as adults SHOULDN'T need to be reminded as often as children, but that doesn't mean we DON'T need to be once in a while. Do yourself a favor - do the WORLD a favor - and take this message to heart because if you aren't part of the solution, then you're part of the problem. Trust me: the world has enough problems already. Let's try to change that one friend at a time.

What a great addition to any "grandma's tool box." Thanks to the author's generosity I was able to read this book via Zoom for free using Kindle Unlimited to my grandson. Such a lovely score of Alaskan animals woven into a great story about appreciating equality and diversity. I will buy this book to share with all my grandchildren in person after the pandemic. Thank you

"The Story of the Lost Bear, Two Suns: The Way to Equality is Through the Heart" is a cute story with an important message that we are all different. Though the moral is an important one, I felt it was repetitive. Many times during the story, the same message was repeated. I think it would have been more enjoyable and engaging if some of the characters had something else to share. The illustrations were alright, but not big and colorful. In addition, the print was small and difficult to read. I feel that the tale was somewhat boring, although it did have a happy ending. Considering all of these factors, my rating is three stars.

Gift for an 8 year old. Who understood the significance between the colours of the animals and likened to the differences between her school friends.
