Native American Tribes: An Enthralling Guide to the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole (U.S. History) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 111 ratings

Do you know the story of the Native American tribes, from the earliest known histories to the first European contact to the modern day?

The “Five Civilized Tribes” tried to adapt to the American way of life, while others fought to keep their land. Which was more successful? This book will attempt to tell their story, the story of those five tribes. It will not go back into the distant past, and it will not be able to cover modern issues within the Native American community. But it will tell the story of how a group of people dealt with a world that had suddenly and drastically changed—and continued to change—and how they dealt with these changes as Native Americans.

In this book, you’ll learn about:
  • The Five Civilized Tribes: Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Choctaw, and Chickasaw
  • The role of disease in the European colonization of America
  • Great Native American fighters like Tecumseh, Crazy Horse, and Black Hawk
  • Great Native American leaders like Pushmataha, Chief John Ross, and Blue Jacket
  • What role Andrew Jackson played in the Indian Removal Act
  • The reality of Native Americans who owned slaves
  • The real story behind the Trail of Tears
  • Great battles like Fallen Timbers, Tippecanoe, Little Bighorn, and St. Clair's Defeat
  • Massacres at Sand Creek and Wounded Knee and the devastation at Prospect Bluff
  • How the Native Americans used and were used by the Americans, British, and Spanish in the southeastern United States
  • And so much more!

This book answers many questions about the way the native American has been treated thru the centuries. I enjoyed learning about the five civilized tribes the most. The government has historically mistreated and abused the native americans, and I found the chapter on Andrew Jackson and the indian removal act interesting.

A BIT TO FAR LEFT FOR ME. I SPENT 17 years traveling the west IN A FIFTH WHEEL ,MET AND TALKED WITH A GREAT MANY INDIANS FROM M ANY TRIBES AND THEY ALL REFERED TO THEMSELVES AS INDIANS, NOT NATIVE AMERICANS. I ALSO NOTICED A GENERAL RELUCTANCE TO TALK ABOUT WHAT TRIBE THEY WERE PART OF, THAT THEY AMERICANS.

There is an awful lot of information in this book. It is an interesting read. I enjoyed learning about the Cherokee, the Choctaw, the Chickasaw, the Seminole, the Muskogee Creek and the other tribes. Learning about the presidents and how they treated the Native Americans, especially Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, upset me. It took hundreds of years to even get our government to admit that they had done something wrong to the first Americans. So many Native Americans died because they were forced off their land because of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Trail of Tears, as well as the fact that small pox, chicken pox, and other diseases that were unheard of hit the population and destroyed so much.

It made me cry quite a bit. It is also sad that Native American doesn’t include the indigenous peoples of middle and South America. It should. It should even include those of the Inuit and native Hawaiians. If it is part of the Americas, it should be part of those things where it belongs.

There were a few spots where it got very dry and my eyes glazed over, but I muddled through to the end. I think children should learn more about the Native Americans in Social Studies- as well as history in high school because we owe them. Honestly, the majority of the different tribes helped all of the different settlers when they first arrived- as the tribes taught them about trapping and corn and other things. It was also ridiculous that the pelts they traded to get the items they wanted was something like 20 pelts for a gun. It is mind boggling. Like I said an interesting read.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Enthralling History has released a four-hour read on the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole tribes which were called the Five Civilized Tribes because they attempted to adopt the practices of American society. Here are some highlights:

The Cherokee are from the southeastern United States, primarily in present-day Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. They were one of the largest and most well-known tribes, and their language is still spoken by some members today. The Cherokee are known for their sophisticated government and legal systems, as well as their agriculture and use of natural resources.

The Chickasaw are from Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. They were known for their military prowess and were fierce defenders of their lands against European colonization. The Choctaw are from Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. They were known for their agriculture, especially their cultivation of corn, and their skilled artisans who produced beautiful baskets and other crafts.

The Creek, also known as the Muscogee, are from present-day Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. They were known for their agriculture and hunting skills, as well as their complex political and social organization. The Seminole are from present-day Florida. They were known for their resistance to European colonization and their adoption of African American slaves as members of their tribe. Today, the Seminole Nation is headquartered in Oklahoma and has a strong economy based on gaming, tourism, and other industries.

These five tribes have rich cultural traditions and continue to play important roles in American society today. They are all headquartered in Oklahoma and their economies are based on gaming, manufacturing, tourism, healthcare, and hospitality.

Decent book. It is written more like an undergraduate college book report and not an historical account. There are some inaccuracies throughout the book, several sections repeat themselves and the chronology is all over the place.

Very interesting and much different from the history taught in schools when I was at school. It is great to see history being corrected and now showing a realistic view of the past.
